The Metrodome collapses!

This is a "Tommy Boy" moment for sure. The definition of a "Tommy Boy" moment? When something happens, and you say, "sorry about your car, man. But that was awesome!". Watch the Mtrodome collapse under the weight of all that snow, here.

P.S. Watch for Dee Snyder!

You've been warned!

The McRib. . . . . . delicious!

So, yesterday, I ate two McRib sandwiches for lunch. Then, after lunch, I had my picture taken with the latest winner in What's in Lex & Terry's Wallet, Carrie Schneider from Huntington. After that, I had a conversation with our receptionist. During that time, I had McRib sauce on my forehead! I'm not even ashamed. You can see it clearly at planet927.com. If you are friends with the Planet on Facebook, you probably wondered: "When did Nate convert to Hinduism?". Well, I didn't. It's McRib sauce. And our photographer promised she'd Photoshop the sauce out of the picture!! It's not bad, though. Now, the McRib is following ME on Twitter!!

Don't make me wash your mouth out. . . . .

This is something that has been bothering me for quite awhile. Where in the world do teenagers get the idea that they can say whatever they want, no matter who is listening or reading? I have several relatives (mostly teenage guys), who have mouths that would make sailors blush. Just recently, my teenage cousin posted something so vile on Facebook that it made me consider deleting him from my friends list. My own family, deleted, can you imagine?

Funny thing, I’ve confronted his mom about how he talks on Facebook before. Her reply: “Oh, Nate, whatever, you were that age too, once”, or something like that. Here’s the thing, I was that age once. And yes, I did raise my share of Hell. But I never talked like that. . . . . . . in front of adults. Did I talk like that among my friends? Yes. In the locker room? Yes. But within earshot of adults? No. To be fair, it isn’t just members of MY family. I emceed an event at a local skate park yesterday and heard a couple of boys (I’d say about 15), using bad language within earshot of adults and young children.

Do you want to know the difference between me and the teenage guys of 2010? I’ll give you a clue, there’s a famous song about it. Respect. Period. I have respect for my elders. The teenagers of today, do not.

Do you know what is more frustrating than the behavior of the teenagers? The behavior of their parents. There must be a book somewhere full of responses for parents called out on the behavior of their teenagers. Here’s my favorite: “I can’t watch them all of the time”. I also like this one, “I’m doing the best I can”. First off, you CAN watch them all the time. Secondly, no, you’re not doing the best you can. If you were, your teenager would be so afraid of messing up, that they wouldn’t talk like, EVER, because they’d be afraid that you MIGHT somehow be listening.

If you’re the parent of a teenager, and I’ve offended you. I don’t care. Stop laughing, stop being your kid’s friend and teach them some respect. If they don’t get your lesson right away, do what my mom did. Make them suck on a bar of soap, works every time.

Music Month!

Let me start out by saying that I love to collect CD’s. That’s right, compact discs. I’ve been collecting them since I was in elementary school and had paper route money and my very first CD Walkman. I have close to 1,000 CD’s now and I still love to play and buy them. Even though I have made some ill-advised CD purchases over the years, I still must listen to the entire album at least once before I file it away. As I got older, in order to prevent having a pile of horrible albums, I’ve come up with the “2 Song Rule”. Meaning: I have to like at least 2 songs from an album before I fork over the money for it. This has proven to be a pretty useful rule. Now, though, being in radio, I get a lot of the CD’s that I would normally buy, for free! I’m not bragging, every job has its perks. But, because of this, I sometimes end up with a pile of CD’s that I haven’t listened to. At first, this didn’t bother me because I thought, “hey, they’re free, who cares if I don’t listen to them?”. But recently, for some reason, my OCD is allowing that glaring stack of unopened CD’s to rattle my brain. So, I’ve declared the rest of August a “Music Month”.

Allow me to explain. During my 20 minute commute to work, I listen mostly to talk radio. I come into work very early and America’s Trucking Network out of Cincinnati really keeps me awake in the early morning darkness. Crazy truckers! On the way home in the afternoon, I usually get caught up on that day’s episode of Lex & Terry. When I’m at home, there is always music playing. However, my wife and I don’t exactly have the same taste in music. Therefore, we usually compromise on something. That “something” doesn’t usually include a CD from my stack of backed-up Real Rock!

So, for the rest of the month, no more talk radio for the Nate Dogg. Instead, I’ll be sorting through my stack of backed-up Real Rock! Wish me luck, I’m waaay behind. No more America’s Trucking Network for August, no more Lex & Terry in the afternoon! It’s Music Month! First up, “Nightmare” from Avenged Sevenfold!

That Ain't My America

I know, I know, Lynyrd Skynyrd already has a song with a title like that. But, that was the feeling I got on Sunday, the 4th of July. Now, let me just say that it wasn't becuase of something serious, like disrespecting the flag, or disrespecting someone in uniform. If that were the case, I'd still be in jail! I said this to myself when I tried to buy some fireworks for my daughter. She's 2 years old and this is probably the first Independence Day that she could somewhat comprehend the meaning. So, I thought, like most other dads, that I'd go down to the local Dollar General and get some legal fireworks. When I was a kid, you could get one of those variety packs that had mostly sparklers but also some fiery, multi-colored projectiles. Well, not anymore. At my local store, you couldn't even buy sparklers! That Ain't My America! I had to settle for smoke bombs and several variations of the same confetti-popping thing. My daughter was still impressed but that's not the point. Have we really come to the point where we can't even buy sparklers? Jeesh.

West Virginia, Wild, Wonderful, and taken for granted

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to travel into the mountains of West Virginia. A friend of ours has a family house in Randolph County, just outside of Elkins. When I say, "just outside", I mean, down a gravel driveway, in the mountains, with a locked gate. In fact, the house is the only thing on the drive. My wife and I, along with our daughter, spent the entire weekend there, along with our friends, and their two sons. It was kind of like camping, without really roughing it. There was no cable or Internet service. There was running water, though. Like I said, not really roughing it. Anyway, let me say that that particular area of West Virginia is absolutely beautiful. Since I work in Huntington, I take for granted, as I'm sure other people do, that there are, in fact, mountains here. Real mountains! We had a great time, saw some great scenery (Bickle Knob, Blackwater Falls, just to name a few places we visited), and enjoyed some great company! Thank you, Harris family! I highly recommend a trip to that area of the Mountain State!

On a sad note, I'd just like to add, RIP, Senator Robert C. Byrd. He was a great American. This comes from a man who does not even live in WV.

Guitar Lessons and the Best Political Ad Ever!

All right, I know it's been awhile. I know I've been promising album reviews (those are still coming). But, I thought I'd let you know about some other things going on with me. Cause I'm just that damned interesting.

First of all, I've been taking guitar lessons at Rt. 60 Music in Barboursville. A big shout out to my teacher, Scott, by the way. Now, I admit that these lessons were offered to me as part of a promotion related to my job. However, I'm telling you something, I'm HOOKED! After just three lessons so far, I can already play some stuff that's recognizable! I'm totally shocked. I've always thought of myself as a rockstar, but now I might be able to back up some of that claim. My lessons are coming to an end but I totally plan on sticking with it. I'm really counting on self-dicipline. We'll see!

Secondly, here is the best political ad ever made:

Even though I despise everything about this guy, I LOVE THIS AD!

Slash. . . .

has a new album in stores. I picked it up yesterday but have yet to unwrap it. When I do, you can expect an official review right here. Being a huge GNR fan, you can imagine how excited I am. Now, we all know (okay not all, but GNR geeks) that Slash doesn't sing. This album features a who's who list of guest vocalists. It's along the same lines as Santana's "Supernatural" from a few years back. The list is very diverse, from Fergie to Lemmy. The Planet is playing the first single right now. It's a little ditty called "By The Sword", featuring Andrew Stockdale from Wolfmother on vocals. Can't wait to listen to the whole thing! An official review will follow. Maybe I should use it for a solo episode of "Guys Drinking Beer". What do you think?

I love America!

First of all, I'd like to say thanks to everyone who has listened to my podcast! I'd also like to extend a special "thank you" to the two people who have been guests so far. Here's the link, in case you've forgotten: guysdrinkingbeer.podomatic.com.

I can't believe the reaction I've gotten so far to a stupid radio-type show that I do from the smallest room in my house! I've got a list of people (mostly family and friends) that are waiting to be guests! Some of them are already planning their visits around a recording session. My brother is coming to visit us this weekend and plans for the next episode are in the works.

Anyway, it's been so much fun. I can't believe that I live in a country where I can, literally, sit around and get drunk and record my conversation. Then, I can post that conversation on the World Wide Web for anyone to listen to! I love America!

Now, If I could just get my mom and my wife to listen!

of "Guys Drinking Beer" is in the works. It will be recorded some time this weekend and hopefully posted by early next week. I've got three possible guests at this point, but none are confirmed. We'll probably record it some time on Saturday. Should be fun. I'll keep you posted.

Mick Jagger

This morning on Lex & Terry, they played a game where they each played a song and asked the rest of the crew: "Am I gay because I like this?". It was pretty funny. Well, I'm here to tell you that not matter how gay you say I am, one of my favorite albums is "Wandering Spirit" by Mick Jagger. God, I love that album. That is all.

"Guys Drinking Beer"

All right, so check this out. Last Friday night, my friend Greg and I recorded what will be the first episode of "Guys Drinking Beer". My personal podcast show. It was fun but wasn't as funny as it could be. Maybe we were just too aware of the computer recording us. Or maybe, like I suggested, we weren't drunk enough first. Either way, it's not bad. It was fun to make and it served as a nice learning experience for episode 2. I'll have it available for your listening pleasure very soon, at www.podomatic.com/guysdrinkingbeer. I'd really love any feedback. I'll be back to let you know when it's up.

Guys Drinking Beer

So, tonight, I might try to make the first episode of my internet radio show! I don't have a place to post it yet, but when I do, I'll let y'all know. Because someone has to listen to it! Here's my working title: "Guys Drinking Beer". What do ya think?

Like a Kid in a Candy Store!

Sooooo,

I finally hooked up the audio equipment in my home studio! Now, the possibilities are endless. I've always wanted to record a stupid, homemade radio-type show from my home office, most likely under the influence of chemicals. Now that everything is up and running at Shoal Creek Studios (that's the corny name I've given the shoebox room in my house), that dream may become a reality! Stay tuned. . . . . . . . . . . . .

Poor Brett Favre

I didn't actually have a horse in yesterday's NFC Championship game between the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints. I would've liked to see Brett Favre get one more chance at the Super Bowl, but, really I was like, meh, whatever.

I will say this, though. Yesterday was another example of a good football game being ruined by the stupid overtime rules in the NFL. We were forced to watch as the team that won the coin toss (Saints), took their time, ran the ball down the field and settled for the field goal. Lame. Just like every other overtime game in the NFL. We all know Favre would've made a game out of it if he'd had a chance. Or maybe they should make the team that won the coin toss at least take one shot at the endzone. Either way, a great game, with a lame ending. Dear NFL: Watch some college football next year and take some notes.

Forgot this one, we had the nicest gym in the county! RIP!

In case you want to share in my misery, here are pictures of my old high school being torn down. It's a sad day. I didn't get to make it back there before it happened. I know, I know, it looks like a small school. It is, my wife calls it a one-room school house.
